President John Dramani Mahama has officially sworn three newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court into office, charging them to uphold the Constitution, safeguard judicial independence and help restore public confidence in Ghana’s justice system.
The new Justices are Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Edward Amoako Asante and Anthony Forson Jnr, a private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association.
They took their oaths of office on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after receiving approval from Parliament.
Addressing the ceremony, President Mahama described the Supreme Court as a vital pillar of Ghana’s constitutional democracy and the highest judicial authority in the country.
“The Supreme Court occupies a unique and indispensable place in governing our Republic. As the final judicial authority, its decisions give meaning to our Constitution, settle questions of profound national importance, and shape the evolution of our laws,” he said.
According to President Mahama, public confidence in the judiciary is closely linked to the Court’s ability to adjudicate cases independently, fairly and strictly within the confines of the law.
He therefore urged the newly sworn-in Justices to perform their responsibilities without fear or favour and remain committed to delivering justice.
“The oath you have taken today is consequential, not ceremonial. It is a solemn covenant with the people of Ghana. It requires you to administer justice without fear or favour, affection or ill will, and to defend the Constitution of Ghana at all times,” the President said.
The President also emphasised the importance of judicial independence in protecting the rights of citizens and ensuring fair determination of cases, especially matters involving politically sensitive and challenging issues.
He encouraged the judiciary to continue pursuing reforms that would make the justice system more efficient and accessible, including the responsible adoption of technology in court administration.
While congratulating the three new Justices, President Mahama urged them to let the Constitution guide their judgments and to handle each case with humility, patience, courage and fairness.
He expressed optimism that their knowledge, experience and expertise would help improve Ghana’s justice system and strengthen public trust in the judiciary.
