Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been released after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued the case against him over an alleged death threat involving National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, September 2, after spending a week on remand in connection with the case.
The discontinuation of the proceedings means the former boxer is no longer facing the charge and is free to leave court without the matter proceeding further.
The case followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Ayitey Powers was alleged to have made threatening remarks directed at Ampofo Ankrah.
He was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, after the video gained widespread attention and triggered calls for police intervention.
The arrest came after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) petitioned for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged comments.
Following his arrest, Ayitey Powers was arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court and remanded for one week as the authorities continued with the legal process.
However, at his latest court appearance, prosecutors discontinued the case, bringing the proceedings to an end.
The incident had generated significant interest within Ghana’s sporting fraternity, particularly against the backdrop of ongoing tensions and disagreements surrounding the administration of boxing in the country.
Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has indicated that he did not want to press charges and chose not to interfere with the investigations into the matter.
