The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will soon announce its official position on the proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The party made this known in a statement dated August 28 and signed by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Chairman of the NPP’s Policy Coordinating Committee.
The proposed amendments are contained in the government’s Position Paper dated July 30, 2026, which responds to recommendations made by the Constitution Review Committee (CRC).
According to the NPP, the party participated in the national constitutional review process by making submissions to the CRC, which subsequently presented its report to the government.
The party said its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee has since undertaken a detailed assessment of both the CRC’s report and the government’s Position Paper.
The committee has completed the preparation of the NPP’s position paper following its analysis of the two documents.
The party explained that the document will now be submitted to its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for consideration and adoption.
“After that, the NPP will communicate its official position on the proposed constitutional amendments to the Ghanaian people,” the statement said.
The announcement comes shortly after the government inaugurated an 11-member Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) on August 28.
The committee, inaugurated by Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Dr Dominic Ayine, is chaired by Presidential Legal Counsel and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew.
Other members include Justice Srem Sai, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Charlotte Osei, Dr Rainer Akumperigya, Emelia Ankomah, Kwame Ayimadu Antwi, Samuel Passah, Oliver Baker Vormawor, Salamatu Iliasu and Eric Owusu-Mensah.
The committee has been tasked with examining the government’s Position Paper alongside the CRC report and developing a comprehensive framework for implementing the proposed constitutional reforms.
Government has reiterated its commitment to an inclusive and transparent constitutional review process aimed at reflecting the aspirations of Ghanaians and strengthening democratic governance.
