Nationwide Power Outage Disrupts Electricity Supply Across Ghana
ACCRA, Ghana — July 29, 2026: A nationwide power outage disrupted electricity supply across Ghana in the early hours of Wednesday after a disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System caused several power generation plants to trip offline. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) confirmed the incident occurred at about 3:11 a.m., prompting emergency restoration efforts involving key stakeholders in the power sector. The outage affected homes, businesses and essential public services, while Ghana Water Limited (GWL) also reported disruptions to water production in some parts of the country due to the loss of electricity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, GRIDCo said the disturbance interrupted the stable operation of the national transmission network, resulting in a widespread loss of power across several regions. The company explained that the unexpected system disturbance led to the automatic shutdown of some generating units as part of protective measures designed to prevent further damage to the electricity network.
GRIDCo said engineers and system operators were immediately deployed to assess the situation and begin restoring power to affected areas. According to the company, emergency restoration procedures were activated shortly after the incident, with technical teams working around the clock alongside the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), independent power producers and other stakeholders to stabilise the national grid.
The company assured the public that restoring electricity safely and as quickly as possible remained its highest priority. It noted that electricity supply would be restored in phases as engineers carefully reconnected transmission lines and generating plants to avoid further instability within the power system.
The blackout also disrupted the operations of several essential services. Ghana Water Limited announced that water production and distribution had been affected in a number of communities because treatment plants and pumping stations rely heavily on electricity from the national grid. The utility appealed to customers to bear with the temporary inconvenience, assuring them that normal water supply would resume once stable power had been restored.
Although electricity restoration commenced shortly after the outage, some communities experienced longer interruptions than others as engineers worked to ensure the safe recovery of the transmission network. Businesses that depend on continuous electricity, including manufacturers, hospitals, retail outlets and small enterprises, also experienced operational challenges during the outage.
GRIDCo said a comprehensive technical investigation had been launched to determine the exact cause of the disturbance. The company explained that identifying the source of the fault would help prevent similar incidents and strengthen the reliability and resilience of Ghana’s electricity transmission system.
The company apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by the outage and thanked consumers for their patience and cooperation during the restoration process. It pledged to continue providing updates on restoration efforts and the outcome of its investigations as more information becomes available.
