Odorgonno Senior High School is set to be elevated to Category A status, a move expected to strengthen the school’s standing within Ghana’s second-cycle education system and expand opportunities for prospective students.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the school’s 86th Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration. He said the decision forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve access to quality education and recognise schools that have demonstrated consistent academic excellence and institutional growth.
According to the Minister, the upgrade reflects Odorgonno Senior High School’s steady progress in academic performance, discipline, infrastructure development and extracurricular achievements over the years. He noted that the new status would enhance the school’s visibility during the Senior High School placement process and attract more students from across the country.
The planned elevation is also expected to encourage further investment in teaching and learning facilities while supporting the school’s long-term development agenda. Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving educational infrastructure and creating an environment that enables students to reach their full potential.
Education experts have welcomed the decision, saying recognising high-performing schools can promote healthy competition and inspire continuous improvement across the country’s education sector. They, however, emphasised that infrastructure expansion, teacher development and adequate learning resources should accompany any change in school classification.
Students, alumni and staff of Odorgonno Senior High School have also expressed optimism that the upgrade will further enhance the institution’s reputation and open new opportunities for academic and extracurricular success.
The elevation to Category A status is expected to take effect as part of the government’s ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s secondary education system and improving the quality of learning nationwide.
