The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations on Migration in Ghana has called on the Government to speed up the ratification of the African Union Free Movement of Persons Protocol, arguing that the move would strengthen Ghana’s leadership role on the continent ahead of President John Dramani Mahama’s anticipated chairmanship of the African Union.
The coalition said Ghana has an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to regional integration by completing the ratification process before President Mahama assumes the continental leadership position. According to the group, doing so would reinforce the country’s long-standing reputation as a champion of Pan-African cooperation and the free movement of people across Africa.
The African Union Free Movement Protocol seeks to make it easier for citizens of member states to travel, reside and establish businesses across the continent. Advocates believe its full implementation will promote trade, investment, tourism and closer economic cooperation among African countries.
The coalition noted that while Ghana has consistently supported continental integration initiatives, ratifying the protocol would translate that commitment into concrete action and encourage other member states to do the same.
Migration and governance experts say wider adoption of the protocol could unlock new economic opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area by reducing barriers to the movement of people, skills and services. They, however, acknowledge that member states will also need to strengthen border management and security systems to address concerns related to cross-border crime and irregular migration.
The coalition expressed confidence that Ghana’s leadership at the African Union would provide an opportunity to advance policies that deepen regional cooperation and accelerate Africa’s integration agenda.
