The Ghana Library Authority has partnered with UK-based social enterprise Sanitopia CIC to commission a modern Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facility in Accra, as part of ongoing efforts to improve hygiene standards in public learning spaces and strengthen access to safe and inclusive library services.

The project forms part of a wider collaboration between both institutions aimed at upgrading sanitation infrastructure across public libraries in Ghana. The initiative aligns with national development goals focused on public health, education, and sustainable community development.

According to details from the Ghana Library Authority, the partnership reflects its broader mandate of establishing and managing libraries nationwide while ensuring that these spaces remain safe, accessible, and conducive for learning. The Authority has in recent years expanded its services beyond traditional book lending to include digital access, community engagement programmes, and infrastructure improvements across its library network .

Sanitopia CIC, a UK-registered social enterprise operating in Ghana and other African countries, focuses on delivering sanitation projects that promote dignity, health, and long-term community impact. The organisation has previously partnered with Ghanaian institutions on similar WASH infrastructure projects, including sanitation facilities in educational environments and public institutions .

Officials involved in the initiative say the commissioning of the Accra facility represents more than just infrastructure delivery, but also a commitment to improving health outcomes and ensuring that public institutions such as libraries provide holistic services that meet basic human needs. Poor sanitation has long been identified as a barrier to public health and educational access in many communities, particularly where public facilities lack adequate hygiene infrastructure.

The partnership also supports broader Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those relating to clean water and sanitation, quality education, and good health and well-being. By integrating WASH facilities into library environments, the initiative aims to reduce health risks, improve user experience, and encourage greater community use of public learning centres.

The Ghana Library Authority has in recent years intensified efforts to modernise its infrastructure, including the expansion of library networks across all regions and the introduction of digital platforms that allow users to access educational materials remotely. These reforms are part of a national push to reposition libraries as community knowledge hubs that combine literacy, technology, and social development services.

Sanitopia CIC has also emphasised its long-term goal of expanding sanitation infrastructure across Ghana and other African countries through scalable community-based projects. The organisation’s model focuses on sustainability, local engagement, and partnerships with public institutions to ensure long-term impact and maintenance of facilities.

The commissioning of the Accra WASH facility adds to a growing list of infrastructure collaborations between development-focused organisations and government agencies aimed at improving living conditions in public institutions. Stakeholders believe such partnerships are critical in addressing long-standing gaps in sanitation infrastructure while promoting healthier learning environments.

Authorities are expected to continue rolling out similar projects in other regions as part of the broader partnership framework, with emphasis on ensuring that public libraries remain safe, modern, and accessible to all users.
