Anthropic has acquired New York based developer tools startup Stainless in a deal valued at about US$300 million, strengthening its push into infrastructure tooling that supports modern AI systems used across the industry.
The acquisition is notable because Stainless’ technology is already used by major technology firms including OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare, making it one of the more widely adopted backend developer tooling platforms in the AI ecosystem.
As part of the deal, Stainless will wind down all of its hosted products, signalling a full integration of its engineering capabilities into Anthropic’s broader AI development stack rather than continuing as a standalone service provider.
The move reflects increasing competition among leading artificial intelligence companies to control not only frontier model development but also the underlying tools that developers rely on to build, deploy, and scale AI applications. Developer infrastructure has become a key strategic battleground in the global AI race, as companies seek to lock in ecosystems that make their platforms more attractive and harder to replace.
