Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer for the 2028 general elections after securing 56.48% of valid votes cast in the party’s presidential primaries.
The results were announced after voting concluded across designated centres nationwide, with party delegates endorsing Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy in a contest that party officials described as peaceful, transparent and competitive. His victory gives him a clear first-round mandate, crossing the 50% threshold required under the NPP’s internal electoral rules.
Dr. Bawumia, who previously served two terms as Vice President of Ghana, campaigned on continuity, digital transformation, economic reform and party unity, positioning himself as a candidate capable of consolidating the NPP’s political base while appealing to undecided voters ahead of the 2028 polls.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Bawumia thanked delegates for their confidence and pledged to unite the party, strengthen its grassroots structures and begin early preparations for the national election. He also acknowledged the contributions of other aspirants, calling for collective support as the party turns its attention to the broader electoral contest.
Party leadership praised the conduct of the primaries, noting that the process reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy. The Electoral Committee said the outcome reflected the will of delegates and would provide a stable platform for the party’s 2028 campaign.
With his election as flagbearer confirmed, Dr. Bawumia now becomes the NPP’s standard-bearer, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched presidential race in 2028.
