The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared five aspirants to contest its Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, scheduled for 7 February 2026, ahead of the by-election on 3 March 2026 following the death of the late MP Mahama Naser Toure.
Here’s a breakdown of the five contenders who will battle for the party’s ticket:
- Mohammed Ramme – A key grassroots figure and the NDC Constituency Chairman in Ayawaso East. His role gives him strong organisational links within the local party structure, making him a significant contender in the primary.
- Hajia Amina Adam – The widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, Mahama Naser Toure. Amina Adam has drawn public attention both for her personal connection to the seat and her campaign’s focus on continuity of service. She was placed number two on the ballot after balloting and has navigated internal party processes amid her mourning period.
- Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed – Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria and a well-known political figure. Baba Jamal has positioned himself as contesting out of a sense of public service, citing loyalty to constituents and a desire to bring experience to national and constituency matters. His diplomatic background and previous parliamentary experience give him profile weight in the race.
- Dr. Yakubu Azindow – A candidate whose technical and professional credentials contribute to his appeal. Though less high-profile than some rivals, Dr. Azindow’s presence in the primary reflects the diversity of expertise within the contest.
- Najib Mohammed Sani – Another aspirant cleared to contest, Najib Mohammed Sani completes the lineup of five candidates. His campaign focuses on grassroots engagement and aligning with party values as the NDC seeks to retain the seat.
An earlier aspirant, Abdul Salam Daru, withdrew from the race and publicly threw his support behind Hajia Amina Adam, a move welcomed by some party supporters as encouraging internal unity.
The candidates were vetted by the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Office on 28 January 2026, after which they were balloted for their positions ahead of the primary election. The outcome of this internal contest will determine who represents the NDC in the Ayawaso East by-election, a contest closely watched as the party seeks to hold onto a seat it has traditionally held.
