NAIMOS storms illegal mining site near Kwabeng Anglican SHS, seizes heavy equipment

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a decisive operation at an illegal mining site located close to Kwabeng Anglican Senior High School in the Eastern Region. The operation resulted in the seizure of excavators and a pay loader as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities that threaten lives public infrastructure and the environment.
According to officials the raid followed credible intelligence indicating that illegal miners had moved heavy machinery dangerously close to the school compound. NAIMOS operatives moved swiftly to the site to prevent further damage and avert potential safety risks to students, teachers and nearby residents. The presence of deep excavations and mining pits close to an educational facility raised alarm among authorities.

NAIMOS officials explained that illegal mining near schools poses serious dangers including land subsidence noise pollution and exposure to harmful chemicals. In addition, the use of heavy equipment in such areas increases the risk of accidents which could have catastrophic consequences for students.
Residents in the area welcomed the intervention stating that the mining activities had disrupted daily life and raised fears about water contamination. Some community members reported that nearby water bodies had changed colour and were no longer safe for domestic use due to mining runoff.

The Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing mining laws without fear or favour. Officials stressed that the operation was not a one-off exercise but part of a broader national strategy to dismantle illegal mining networks. They noted that beyond seizing equipment NAIMOS is working with other state institutions to identify financiers and sponsors of galamsey operations.
Education stakeholders also praised the action describing it as necessary to protect learning environments. They called for continued surveillance around schools located in mining prone areas to ensure that illegal operators do not return.

The seized equipment has been secured pending further investigations and possible legal action. NAIMOS has warned that individuals who continue to engage in illegal mining will face the full force of the law as the government intensifies efforts to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources.
