Government approves 120% NHIS tariff increase for healthcare providers

The government of Ghana has announced a major increase in tariffs paid to service providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), raising the rates by 120 percent beginning in 2026. The decision, described by health officials as a “game-changer”, aims to address long-standing complaints from hospitals and clinics that existing reimbursements were insufficient to cover the cost of care and operations.

According to the Ministry of Health, the increase responds directly to concerns over unrealistic tariffs that have at times forced service providers to refuse NHIS patients or demand illegal co-payments. Health providers argued that the pre-existing rates did not reflect rising costs of medicines, equipment and labour — pressures worsened by inflation and currency fluctuations.

With the adjustment, the government aims to restore confidence among service providers and ensure timely reimbursement. The measure is part of broader health reforms that also include increased budget allocations for the health sector, improved supply of medicines, and expansion of health infrastructure. Authorities believe the tariff hike will help stabilise NHIS operations and expand access to quality care.

Health-sector stakeholders have welcomed the decision, describing it as long overdue. Hospitals and clinics across urban and rural zones expressed relief, stating that the tariff update should reduce service disruptions and discourage providers from turning away insured patients. Many also hope that improved reimbursement will enable them to invest in essential medical equipment and improve service delivery.

However, some experts caution that the success of the policy will depend heavily on consistent and prompt funding, proper claims processing and transparency. They argue that tariff increases alone may not resolve systemic challenges if administrative inefficiencies and resource constraints persist.

For the public, the tariff increase promises better value from NHIS membership and improved access to healthcare services without fear of hidden payments. If implemented as promised, the adjustment could mark a turning point for Ghana’s healthcare financing and strengthen trust in the national insurance scheme.
