Dr. Yaw Adutwum Declares Bid for NPP 2028 Flagbearer Race

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency, has officially announced his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.

Announcement Made via Social Media

The declaration came on June 18, 2025, just a day after the NPP leadership confirmed January 31, 2026, as the date for the party’s presidential primaries.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated on his official social media page.

Although the party has not yet opened nominations, Adutwum’s early announcement places him among the first to signal a bid for the leadership slot.

A Technocrat with Deep Roots in Education

Born on April 9, 1964, in Jachie, Ashanti Region, Dr. Adutwum is widely respected for his education sector reforms and long-standing contributions to policy-making in Ghana. He holds multiple academic qualifications, including:

  • PhD in Educational Policy, Planning and Administration – University of Southern California
  • Master’s in Education Management – University of La Verne, California
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching – Chapman University, California
  • Bachelor’s in Land Economy/Business Administration – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)

Adutwum has also served on global platforms such as the Advisory Board of the Capacity Building Center at UCLA’s School of Education and the High-Level Advisory Group for Mission 4.7.

Political Trajectory and Achievements

Appointed in 2017 as Deputy Minister for Education under President Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Adutwum was later elevated to the substantive position, where he spearheaded the government’s educational transformation agenda. He has been MP for Bosomtwe since 2017 and is known for championing STEM education, teacher professionalism, and school infrastructure development.

Rising Stakes in NPP 2028 Race

With the NPP poised to elect a new flagbearer to lead the party into the 2028 general elections, Dr. Adutwum’s entry signals a technocratic challenge to traditional political contenders. Analysts believe his strong policy background and clean political image could appeal to party delegates seeking a break from the status quo.

More contenders are expected to emerge as the party officially opens nominations in the coming months.
