INTERPOL Issues Red Notice for Ken Ofori-Atta

Ken Ofori-Atta Wanted by INTERPOL Over Alleged Corruption and Abuse of Office
Former Finance Minister under global spotlight for procurement breaches and failure to appear before Ghana’s Special Prosecutor
Former Ghanaian Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been placed on an INTERPOL Red Notice, officially making him a wanted person across international borders. The notice, issued at the request of Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), stems from serious allegations involving the abuse of public office for personal gain, corruption, and breaches of procurement laws.
Why Ofori-Atta Is on INTERPOL’s Radar
According to the OSP, Ofori-Atta failed to honour a scheduled invitation for questioning on June 2, 2025, in relation to multiple ongoing investigations. These include procurement irregularities linked to the National Cathedral project, petroleum revenue mismanagement, and other public finance scandals during his tenure.
Despite being given opportunities to cooperate, the former minister allegedly ignored repeated summons. His conduct prompted the OSP to escalate the matter to INTERPOL, citing him as a fugitive from justice.

Allegations: Public Office for Profit
The charges focus on accusations that Ofori-Atta used his official position for personal enrichment, a serious offence under both local and international anti-corruption frameworks. Procurement irregularities and financial mismanagement during his time in office are central to the case.
Global Manhunt and Extradition
With the Red Notice now active, law enforcement agencies across INTERPOL’s 194 member countries are expected to assist in locating and provisionally arresting Ofori-Atta. The goal is to facilitate his extradition back to Ghana to face formal charges.
Legal Pushback: Health and Virtual Interview Controversy
Ofori-Atta’s legal team has argued that the former minister is medically unfit to appear in person and requested a virtual interview instead. They claim medical documentation was submitted in advance. However, the OSP rejected this approach, insisting on physical presence and citing the seriousness of the allegations.
A Landmark Moment in Ghana’s Anti-Corruption Fight
The issuance of an INTERPOL Red Notice against such a high-profile political figure marks a watershed moment in Ghana’s governance and anti-corruption efforts. It signals the OSP’s commitment to holding public officials accountable, regardless of rank or status.
As the case unfolds, public attention is expected to intensify, with implications for both Ghana’s political landscape and its international reputation.
