The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared that its planned demonstration against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo will send shockwaves across the nation and reignite public discourse on judicial independence.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, asserted that the protest, scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025, is poised to “shake Ghana” and rally citizens against what the party describes as creeping tyranny under the current government.
“This demonstration is going to shake Ghana. If not, we won’t back down until Ghanaians realise that they made a mistake with their vote in the 2024 election,” Ahiagbah declared.
The Chief Justice’s suspension followed a prima facie case established after three separate petitions called for her removal. However, the NPP and other opposition parties have roundly condemned the move, calling it a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary.
Protest Route and Coalition Support
According to Mr. Ahiagbah, the demonstration will be led by NPP National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim, who has paused the party’s ongoing nationwide Thank You Tour to spearhead the effort.
A broad coalition of political parties is expected to join the protest, including:
- The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)
- The National Democratic Party (NDP)
- The People’s National Party (PNP)
- The Ghana Union Movement (GUM)
The protest is scheduled to kick off at 7 a.m. from the park opposite the Supreme Court. Protesters will march through Parliament House and conclude at the Jubilee House, where a formal petition will be submitted to President John Dramani Mahama or his representative.
NPP Accuses Government of Judicial Interference
The NPP’s leadership has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating the suspension to consolidate power and intimidate the judiciary.
“NDC now wants to take their tendencies for dictatorship to a tyranny,” Ahiagbah charged during his interview, warning that the party will continue to resist until justice and democratic principles are restored.
The upcoming demonstration, dubbed “Save the Judiciary Demo,” has garnered attention from both local and international observers as tensions rise over governance and judicial autonomy in Ghana.
