The husband of the late Nigerian gospel musician Osinachi Nwachukwu has been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of causing her death.

A Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the ruling on Tuesday, April 23, 2025, after months of trial. The prosecution, led by the Nigerian government, charged Peter Nwachukwu with culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code. He was accused of subjecting Osinachi to years of domestic violence that ultimately led to her death in April 2022.

The court, presided over by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, ruled that the evidence presented—including testimonies from medical experts, family members, and Osinachi’s children—proved beyond reasonable doubt that the abuse inflicted by her husband caused her death.

Her death sparked nationwide outrage, leading to calls for justice and renewed conversations around domestic violence in Nigeria and Africa at large.

Following her death, shocking revelations emerged about the years of abuse she allegedly suffered in silence at the hands of her husband.

Social Media Reactions

Following the verdict, social media platforms exploded with reactions.
Many Nigerians and gospel music fans across Africa expressed relief that justice had finally been served.

Some comments read:

“Justice for Osinachi! May her soul now rest in peace.” “This should be a warning to all abusers. Domestic violence must never be tolerated.”

Others used the occasion to call for stronger legal protections for victims of domestic abuse.

Final Sentencing

Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled that Peter Nwachukwu be sentenced to death by hanging, stating that “the evidence leaves no doubt that his acts led to Osinachi’s untimely death.”

Peter Nwachukwu’s defense team has indicated they will appeal the ruling.
