The Dr. Eduard Gübelin Research Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded by the Dr. Eduard Gübelin Association for Research & Identification of Precious Stones, a non-profit entity within the Gübelin Group to support innovative research projects in the field of gemmology and related scientific disciplines. The scholarship is intended for Master’s and PhD students or post-doctoral researchers in fields such as earth sciences (mineralogy, geology, geochemistry), crystallography, chemistry, physics, material sciences, archaeology, and biology.

The scholarship aims to support innovative projects that contribute to the advancement of gemmological knowledge. The scholarship can be taken anywhere across the worl. The organization awards funds for one project per calendar year if suitable proposals are submitted. The successful project proposal must be innovative, demonstrating novel thinking and contributing to the advancement of gemmological science.

Recipients the scholarship receive an amount up to USD 30,000 invested each year to support the awarded project. The available funds are split to cater for the costs and expenses related to the use of analytical infrastructure, such as services and support provided by the Gübelin Gem Lab, travel and accommodation costs, costs related to the use of the analytical infrastructure, equipment and personnel, as well as costs for publication and presentation of project results, and cash contributions paid directly to the successful recipient.

The Association is not liable for social insurance costs. The Association reserves the right to revoke a scholarship and to make a claim for reimbursement.

Criteria for application for the Dr. Eduard Gübelin Research Scholarship

The Dr. Eduard Gübelin Research Scholarship is open to students and researchers at the MSc, PhD or post-doctoral level. Applications are open to individuals of all nationalities. Applicants must hold a BSc degree in earth sciences, chemistry, physics, material sciences, or a related hard science. The successful recipient, who must be an individual (not an institution or company), is encouraged to collaborate with universities or research institutes. Candidates who are more than 40 years of age are not eligible to apply.

Prospective applicants are advised to research more on the program before beginning their application. Applicants will be required to fill out an online application form providing accurately all the necessary information. Applicants who meet the specified requirements are to submit their research project proposals along with a current curriculum vitae and details of their previous scientific achievements. The proposal must be submitted in English with a maximum of 10,000 characters and not more than 10 illustrations, images, tables or photos.

The project proposal may include a period at the Gübelin Gem Lab in Lucerne, Switzerland, if deemed advantageous. Applicants can utilize the lab’s infrastructure, including the facility’s Reference Collection and analytical equipment, with support from lab scientists.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted and evaluated on a scale of 0 to 10 by an evaluation committee. The average mark determines the winning proposal. In case of a tie, the youngest participant receives the scholarship. Applications are open till 31st July 2024.
