The investments are expected to stimulate economic activities, support businesses and create employment opportunities across the region.

Speaking at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival in Anloga on Saturday, November 7, President Mahama outlined the government’s plans to position the Volta Region as a major centre for tourism, agricultural and industrial development.

He disclosed that the 2027 budget would outline the government’s proposed investments under its new economy policy, which aims to channel more than US$9 billion into key sectors between 2027 and 2030.

“Next week, the Minister of Finance will present on my behalf the 2027 budget. In this presentation, we will outline our plan for what we call the new economy. This is a bold initiative that will seek to invest over nine billion dollars ($9b) in sectors of the economy between 2027 and 2030,” he said.

The President identified textiles, garment manufacturing, commercial agriculture, hospitality and tourism as key areas expected to benefit from the policy in the Volta Region.

As part of the government’s industrialisation agenda, he revealed that the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank) had been tasked with establishing a garment factory and developing a light industrial area at Weta in the Ketu North Municipality.

According to him, 200 acres of land have been acquired for the project, which is expected to create about 3,000 jobs initially, with employment opportunities projected to increase to 10,000 when the facility becomes fully operational.

“We have commissioned the Ghana EXIM Bank to commence work on a Light Industrial Area in the Weta area. 200 acres of land have been acquired. This industrial area will be dedicated to the textile and garment industry. We expect that initially, when it starts, it will create some 3,000 jobs and grow eventually to 10,000 jobs when it is fully operational,” he stated.

The proposed development is expected to strengthen the textile and garment industry while expanding employment opportunities for residents of the Volta Region.
