The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is considering a new measure that would see drivers lose their licences after accumulating six traffic violation tickets within two years.

Under the proposed arrangement, motorists who reach the specified threshold would be required to undergo retraining before they could qualify for new driving licences.

DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey announced the proposal as part of efforts to improve driver education, strengthen road safety and address repeated breaches of traffic regulations.

He explained that drivers who repeatedly disregard road rules would have their licences withdrawn and would need to return to the authority for additional training before their licences could be reissued.

“We will seize your licence from you six times within two years. We will seize your licence from you and account for retraining and re-issuance of the driver’s licence,” Mr Kotey said.

He noted that the proposed measure would ensure that persistent traffic offenders receive further training to improve their driving skills and understanding of road safety requirements before being allowed back on the road.

The announcement comes ahead of the planned launch of the DVLA’s Skills Development Centre, which is expected to enhance driver training and promote the development of essential driving skills.

The proposed policy is intended to reinforce accountability among motorists while making driver competence a key consideration in efforts to reduce road traffic violations.

However, the authority has yet to announce an implementation date or provide further details on how the six-ticket limit will be calculated and the retraining process drivers would be required to complete.
