The Nkawkaw Divisional Police Command has commenced a search for suspects following a shooting incident at an illegal mining site at Behenase, near Awiregya in the Kwahu West Municipality.
The incident reportedly occurred during a confrontation between two rival groups operating at the mining site, leaving at least two people with gunshot wounds.
The injured victims have been admitted to the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw, where they are receiving treatment.
Another person is also receiving medical attention after reportedly sustaining serious injuries to the genital area during the confrontation.
The circumstances that triggered the clash remain unclear, while police investigations are ongoing to establish what led to the violence and identify those responsible.
The incident has renewed concerns about growing violence and insecurity associated with illegal mining activities in parts of the area.
Speaking to the media, the Assembly Member for the Awiregya Electoral Area, Sampson Tenkoang, appealed to National Security and other law enforcement agencies to step up efforts to remove illegal miners from the area.
“I would really be glad if the government takes steps to ensure these illegal mining activities cease. This is not the first time such an incident has happened,” he said.
Meanwhile, the family of one of the victims is calling for justice, urging the authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
Abena Grace, a relative of one of the victims, expressed concern over what she described as the growing violence associated with illegal mining and called on investigators to thoroughly pursue the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.
