Ghana has taken a significant step onto the global technical and vocational education stage after making its debut at the WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai, China.
The historic participation brings together three young Ghanaian talents who are representing the country in Welding, Electrical Installations, and IT Network Systems Administration.
Ghana became an official member of WorldSkills International in September 2019, paving the way for the country to participate in the global skills competition. After years of preparations, the country has now realised that ambition with its first appearance at the prestigious event.
The 48th WorldSkills Competition officially commenced on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, with young professionals from countries across the world competing in various technical and vocational disciplines.
The Ghanaian delegation is led by the Director-General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), Mr. Zakaria Sulemana, with officials from the Commission accompanying and supporting the competitors during the competition.
Beyond the opportunity to compete for medals, Ghana’s participation gives the three competitors a platform to showcase their technical abilities, interact with other young professionals and gain exposure to international standards in their respective fields.
The Public Relations Unit of CTVET said the country’s presence at the competition also demonstrates the growing importance of technical and vocational education and training in equipping young people with practical skills, encouraging innovation and preparing them for opportunities in the modern economy.
According to the unit, “Team Ghana carries the hopes of a nation while seeking to make a strong impression on the international skills stage”.
It added that “The team’s objectives are clear: compete with excellence, learn from the world’s leading young skills professionals, gain valuable international experience and proudly raise high the Ghanaian flag”.
As the competition continues in Shanghai, Team Ghana is expected to use the international platform to gain valuable experience while showcasing the quality of technical and vocational skills being developed among young people in Ghana.
