The government has commenced preparatory works for the construction of a new 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
The facility is expected to replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit, which has become dilapidated, while providing modern and specialised healthcare services for mothers and children.
Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the development in a post on X, describing it as part of President John Mahama’s efforts to expand and modernise major health infrastructure across the country.
The new block will feature specialised Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards, Labour and Delivery Suites, Operating Theatres, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
It will also house a High Dependency Unit (HDU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, as well as Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics.
Other planned facilities include Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics, Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units, an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit, Diagnostic Imaging Department, Laboratory and Blood Bank Facilities, and a Pharmacy Department.
The project will further include a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units, as well as spaces dedicated to teaching, research and conferences.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, the project forms part of President Mahama’s renewed investment in major health infrastructure, with the broader objective of improving healthcare delivery in Ghana.
