President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York, where he is expected to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The Presidency announced his departure in a statement dated September 19, 2026, signed by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
This year’s UNGA is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
Mahama to host two major side events
As part of his engagements in New York, President Mahama will host two high-level side events focusing on Africa’s development and international efforts toward historical justice.
The first, scheduled for Monday, September 21, will focus on the Accra Reset under the theme, “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again.” The event will bring together world leaders to discuss measures to improve the global development system.
On Wednesday, September 23, the President will host another side event on the “Next Steps”, focusing on “From Commitments to Action on Reparatory Justice: Advancing International Cooperation for the Return and Restitution of Cultural Properties and Heritage.”
President to address UN General Debate
President Mahama is scheduled to deliver Ghana’s national statement during the main General Debate of the UN General Assembly on Thursday, September 24.
Beyond the UN proceedings, the President is expected to hold a series of bilateral and business engagements aimed at strengthening international partnerships and attracting investment to Ghana.
He is scheduled to meet other heads of state and government, the UN Secretary-General and executives of multinational companies.
As part of efforts to promote Ghana as an investment destination, President Mahama will also ring the NASDAQ Closing Bell and participate in a US-Ghana Presidential Roundtable organised by the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce.
He will further deliver an address at the Council on Foreign Relations and participate in the Ocean Panel Leaders’ Meeting.
Town Hall with Ghanaian community
On Friday, September 25, President Mahama will engage members of the Ghanaian community in New York at a Town Hall meeting.
The engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for the President to share updates on his administration’s development agenda and interact directly with Ghanaians living in the United States.
The President is accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, other Cabinet Ministers, senior officials from the Presidency and other government representatives.
