The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Mubarick Masawudu, has demanded a retraction and an unqualified apology from The Insight over a publication linking him to alleged interference in a land dispute at Spintex in Accra.
The demand was made through his solicitors, Limo@Law, in a letter dated September 15, 2026, following a publication headlined “Maritime Dep Boss Accused …of Interference in Spintex Land Dispute.”
According to the lawyers, the publication wrongly suggested that their client was connected to the alleged use of land guards in the dispute.
They maintained that Masawudu “is not a party to, nor in any way connected with, the land dispute referred to in your publication or with any of the persons involved therein.”
The solicitors further stated that there was no factual basis for associating the GMA Deputy Director General with the alleged activities, insisting that he had neither instructed, engaged, facilitated nor funded any land guard operations connected to the dispute.
They said the publication had the potential to expose their client to “public opprobrium, ridicule and hostility” and affect his “hard-earned integrity, standing and reputation.”
Four demands
In the letter, the lawyers gave The Insight seven days from receipt of the notice to comply with four demands.
They asked the newspaper to publish a “clear, unequivocal and unconditional retraction” of the publication and give the retraction the same prominence as the original report.
They also demanded that the publication be removed and withdrawn from the newspaper’s digital and online platforms, with any further circulation stopped insofar as it identifies or refers to Masawudu.
The lawyers further demanded an “unqualified apology” to their client, clarifying that the publication wrongly associated him with the alleged use of land guards and that he has no involvement or connection with the land dispute.
Legal action threatened
The solicitors warned that failure to comply with the demands within the seven-day period would result in instructions to pursue “all appropriate legal remedies available to him without further notice.”
The development comes amid ongoing public attention to the reported land dispute at Spintex, with Masawudu’s legal representatives seeking to distance their client from the matter and to have the publication corrected.
The dispute over the publication is now expected to hinge on whether The Insight will meet the demands contained in the legal notice within the stipulated seven-day period.
