The Ghana Air Force has formally taken over security duties at the Presidency from the Ghana Navy following the 49th Ceremonial Changing of the Guard Parade held on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The ceremony, which was presided over by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, marked the official transfer of responsibility to the Ghana Air Force for the next three months.
The Changing of the Guard is a longstanding military tradition at the Presidency, under which security responsibilities at the seat of government rotate every three months among the three services of the Ghana Armed Forces — the Ghana Army, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force.
With the latest handover, the Ghana Navy has completed its three-month period of duty, paving the way for the Ghana Air Force to assume responsibility for security at the Presidency.
The colourful ceremony brought together government officials, security personnel and schoolchildren who gathered to witness the formal military handover and the accompanying ceremonial displays.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alex Segbefia; Minister for the Interior, Mutanka Mohammed Mubarak; Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu; and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.
The event featured precision drills, disciplined military formations, performances by the military band and other ceremonial displays, highlighting the professionalism and traditions of Ghana’s Armed Forces.
As part of the proceedings, personnel from the outgoing Ghana Navy contingent formally handed over their responsibilities to the incoming Ghana Air Force contingent through a coordinated military parade.
The drills demonstrated the discipline, precision and teamwork expected of personnel assigned to perform security duties at the Presidency.
The military band also played a central role in the ceremony, providing musical accompaniment and adding colour and pageantry to the formal transition.
Beyond its ceremonial significance, the Changing of the Guard serves a practical purpose by ensuring a smooth and continuous security arrangement at the Presidency as responsibility moves from one military service to another.
The personnel assigned to the duty are expected to maintain a high standard of vigilance, discipline and professionalism throughout their three-month deployment.
At the end of the ceremony, the Ghana Air Force contingent was formally installed as the new guard responsible for security at the Presidency.
