Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine temporarily handed over to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) by the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH) popularly known as Ridge Hospital to enhance its capacity to provide critical care.
ECMO is an advanced life-support system designed to provide temporary assistance to patients whose heart and lungs are severely impaired.
The machine is expected to strengthen UGMC’s ability to manage critically ill patients who require specialised life-support treatment, particularly in cases where conventional treatment may not be sufficient.
The temporary transfer forms part of an agreement between the two health institutions aimed at ensuring that specialised medical equipment is utilised effectively for the benefit of patients.
Under the arrangement, UGMC will retain the ECMO machine until GARH requires it, at which point it will be returned to the Ridge Hospital.
The initiative underscores the importance of collaboration and resource-sharing among healthcare institutions in improving access to specialised medical services and strengthening Ghana’s critical care system.
Authorities at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital said the facility remains committed to partnerships that promote the efficient use of healthcare resources, improve patient outcomes and ultimately help save lives.
