Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard has been handed a $700,000 fine by the National Basketball Association (NBA) after an independent investigation confirmed he, along with the Clippers organization, had violated the league’s salary cap circumvention rules. Editorial Standards
“The league is now prepared to announce sanctions.” said NBA official Mark Tavares. “Here on Thursday, in order for you to stay in compliance with the rules that everybody adheres to, you’ve got to move forward with an enforcement process.
The process concluded the team’s pattern of misconduct involved off-court income opportunities between the player and the team, which have also been identified between the Clippers and third parties engaged in business with the team.
The NBA’s imposed punishments have become one of the league’s top three NBA Salary Cap penalty ever in league history.
The team also gets a 30 million dollar fine and loss of five unprotected first round draft picks, which are from 2029- 2033.
Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has also been issued a one-year suspension from all activities with league as well team business practices.
The teams president of business operations has been given a six months suspension and her 3.8 million dollar salary for the 2024-25 season “It would also seem the team had been directing a portion of personal expenses related to and paid for by the company on behalf of Leonard directly by making payments associated with Leonard’s and his representatives’ lives.
The violation has not lead to any suspension or impact on his contract by the NBA.
As Leonard mentioned in his statement he had come into the agreements as to where everybody else is playing. We have leadership failings.”Leonard did take some ownership though. “I do accept responsibility,” he added. “It’s not good and I regret any distraction it’s caused my family and team.” It’s an historic penalty for a league trying to keep things level “We think this penalty is one of those actions to ensure people get what it’s entitled,” commissioner Silver said in a public statement Thursday.
The Clippers in response said “The team, based on our review of our team’s’ actions , the League’s rules, The NBA’s findings and the NBA’s proposed penalties have issued its ‘strong repudiation’ of the NBA’s conclusions and that it expects to vigorously challenge those findings and penalties in full.
“Our team and league professionals were in constant communication with the league at the beginning and during this investigation, throughout our discussions the league always told us what we were doin was not permissible and what type of penalties we could of recieved,” said Clippers.
As much as the league may want a quick snap shut, the issues remain a problem for the Clippers “With losing five unprotected picks and being down for five straight years it might hinder and impact the team to do the one thing the NBA wants a team to get young talented players to compete with the best team in the league and rebuild and reshape in the upcoming years.”
The team would then begin a five-year compliance-monitoring programme under the National Basketball Association which should limit the NBA to what the players can and can’t.
Leonard faces 700k dollars however can continue to do what he does but had to reiterate that “I did enter in all the information for that I was a part of in good faith, fully committed.”
