Carlos Queiroz will continue as head coach of the Black Stars after reaching an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to extend his stay with the national team.
The GFA announced the decision on Wednesday night, confirming that the Portuguese coach will lead Ghana into the next phase of its programme, including preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The agreement follows the expiration of Queiroz’s initial four-month contract, which was signed in April to cover Ghana’s preparations for and participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Carlos Queiroz was brought in as a short-term replacement for Otto Addo, with his original mandate ending after the World Cup.
Queiroz to lead Ghana into 2027 AFCON qualifiers
During the World Cup, Ghana progressed from Group L after beating Panama, drawing with England and losing to Croatia.
The Black Stars’ campaign eventually ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Although his initial contract expired after the tournament, discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz resulted in an agreement for him to remain in charge.
The GFA said his new mandate will begin with the upcoming international window.
Experience behind decision to retain Carlos Queiroz
The 73-year-old coach brings considerable international experience to the Black Stars job, having previously managed Portugal, Iran, South Africa and Colombia.
He has also worked as an assistant coach at Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The GFA believes his extensive experience and familiarity with the current Black Stars squad were important factors in the decision to retain him.
The association has yet to disclose the duration of Queiroz’s new contract but said further details will be announced soon.
