Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been remanded into police custody for one week by the Dansoman Circuit Court over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following his arrest by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with a video circulating on social media.
The court has adjourned the case to September 2, 2026, when the police are expected to update the court on the progress of their investigations.
The former boxer reportedly presented himself at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters after being invited to assist with investigations into the video, in which he was allegedly seen making threatening comments against the NSA Director-General.
He was subsequently arrested, detained and brought before the court after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for his arrest and prosecution.
The GBIMC has described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and urged the relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly. The committee has also initiated disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers, which could affect his position within Ghana’s boxing community.
The case comes at a time of increased scrutiny over the conduct of figures in Ghanaian boxing, particularly comments and social media activities considered threatening or harmful to the image of the sport.
Police have meanwhile appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information about the case while investigations continue.
Ayitey Powers will remain in police custody until his next court appearance on September 2, 2026.
