Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings are scheduled to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, August 25, for vetting following their nomination to serve as ministers.
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin referred the nominations to the Appointments Committee when the House resumed from recess on Monday, August 24.
The two nominees will appear alongside a nominee for the Supreme Court as Parliament begins the process of considering their appointments.
Mahama Ayariga has been nominated as Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, while Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been nominated to head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.
Their vetting follows President John Dramani Mahama’s ministerial reshuffle announced on August 7.
As part of the changes, former Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim was reassigned to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.
Mr Ayariga, who previously served as Majority Leader in Parliament, was subsequently nominated to take charge of the Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Ministry.
Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings was also named Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.
The changes were announced in a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on August 7.
The reshuffle also saw Works and Housing Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei reassigned to the Ministry of Defence.
The changes represent the first major ministerial reshuffle of President Mahama’s second term in office.
Following the August 25 vetting, two additional nominees to the Supreme Court are expected to appear before the Appointments Committee on August 26 for consideration.
The vetting process will allow the committee to assess the nominees’ qualifications, experience and suitability for their respective positions before submitting its recommendations to Parliament.
