The contractor working on the 27.8-kilometre Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya road project has assured government that the first lane between Dodowa Junction and Afienya Junction will be completed and opened to traffic by December 2026, providing relief to commuters who currently use the dusty and congested route.
The first lane of the Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya road project is expected to open to traffic by December 2026, according to assurances given by the contractor handling the project.
Oswal Investment Limited, the company executing the project, said the first lane from Dodowa Junction to Afienya Junction would be completed by December.
The development is expected to provide relief to commuters who currently depend on sections of the existing road, which have been described as dusty and difficult to use.
Once the first lane is completed, traffic will be diverted onto the newly constructed road while construction continues on the second lane.
The contractor gave the assurance during a briefing at the company’s Oyibi project camp site.
The briefing formed part of an inspection of major road projects in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza.
The minister was accompanied by engineers from his ministry and the Ghana Highway Authority.
The inspection covered the Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya road as well as the Adentan-Dodowa road project.
The contractor reported that the overall Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya project was approximately 62 per cent complete.
The project covers a total length of 27.8 kilometres and is intended to improve connectivity between several rapidly developing communities in the Greater Accra Region.
The road project includes a 20.8-kilometre single-carriageway asphalt road with walkways.
It also includes four kilometres of dual carriageway around the Dodowa, Afienya and Dawhenya junctions.
Another major component is a 40-metre-span, four-lane concrete bridge over the River Detsedor at Afienya.
The project began in December 2025 and is scheduled for overall completion in December 2027.
The opening of the first lane before completion of the entire project is expected to allow motorists to begin using part of the improved road while construction continues.
For commuters, this could reduce the difficulties associated with the existing road conditions.
The Dodowa-Afienya corridor serves communities experiencing significant population growth and increasing commercial activity.
As more people settle in these areas, pressure on transportation infrastructure has increased.
Road users have frequently raised concerns about congestion, dust and travel difficulties along sections of the route.
The government’s investment in the project is therefore aimed at improving transportation and supporting economic activity in the area.
Road infrastructure is important for the movement of people, agricultural products, industrial goods and other commodities.
Improved roads can also support businesses by reducing travel times and vehicle operating costs.
The project forms part of broader road development efforts being undertaken under the government’s infrastructure programme.
During the inspection, the Roads and Highways Minister also assessed progress on the Adentan-Dodowa road project.
The Adentan-Dodowa project was reported to be 65.45 per cent complete.
When completed, the project will include different sections of dual carriageway, with two-by-four lanes over eight kilometres, two-by-three lanes over six kilometres and two-by-two lanes over eight kilometres.
It will also include seven roundabouts, 23 major intersections and two footbridges.
The Adentan-Dodowa project commenced in March 2024 and is expected to be completed in March 2027.
The two projects are expected to improve connectivity between communities in the eastern part of Greater Accra.
The contractor’s December target for the first lane of the Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya road will therefore be closely monitored by road users and government officials.
The Roads and Highways Minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of work being carried out by Oswal Investment Limited following the inspection.
However, completing the first lane on schedule will require the contractor to maintain the current pace of construction while meeting the required engineering and safety standards.
Road projects of this scale require coordination between contractors, engineers, government agencies and local communities.
Traffic management will also become important once vehicles are diverted onto the newly constructed lane.
Motorists will need clear signage and appropriate traffic-control measures as construction continues around the operational section.
The project is expected to continue through 2027 before the entire road is completed.
For residents and commuters, the immediate priority is the opening of the first completed section.
If the December target is achieved, motorists could begin benefiting from improved road conditions before the full project is finished.
The development is therefore being closely watched as government continues efforts to improve road infrastructure and ease transportation challenges across the Greater Accra Region.
