The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of a Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport on Friday, August 14, 2026.

According to the Ministry, the deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in Ghana at about 5:50 p.m. aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa as part of the government’s ongoing evacuation exercise.

    Evacuee

In a statement, the Ministry said the evacuee was taken to the Emergency Medical Reception at the airport after his health condition deteriorated shortly before the aircraft landed.

“Reports by other passengers indicate that the deceased’s health condition began to deteriorate about 30 minutes to touch down in Accra,” the Ministry said.

A medical emergency team was on standby at the airport and attended to the passenger immediately after his arrival. However, despite efforts to save his life, doctors confirmed his death at 6:55 p.m.

    Evacuee

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces with deep sadness the death of one of the Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa upon arrival in Ghana at the Emergency Medical Reception at the Accra International Airport at 6:55pm on Friday, 14th August, 2026,” the statement said.

The Ministry said arrangements were underway to formally inform the deceased’s family.

The remains have also been deposited at the Police Hospital for an autopsy to establish further details surrounding the death.

The Ministry said it would provide additional information after engaging with the bereaved family.

The death comes amid the government’s ongoing efforts to evacuate Ghanaians from South Africa following an upsurge in xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

Nearly 2,000 Ghanaians have so far been evacuated from South Africa and reintegrated into the country as part of the government’s response to the situation.
