The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted 866 parcels of a substance suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated street value of $6.9 million, during an intelligence-led operation at the Tema Harbour enclave.
The operation was carried out on the evening of August 5, 2026, after police received intelligence that a group of men were loading sacks of gari containing suspected narcotics into a 40-foot container for export.
Acting on the information, officers raided a warehouse within the Tema Harbour enclave, where they found three men allegedly supervising the loading of the container.
Addressing a press conference on August 6, 2026, the Tema Regional Police Commander, DCOP Eric Asamoah Asiedu, identified the suspects as Delano Owen, 31, a Dutch national; John Mensah Sarbah, 41; and Alhaji Iddrisu Haruna, 52.
Police said officers found sacks containing suspected narcotics being loaded into a 40-foot container mounted on a white DAF truck with registration number WR 1118-10.
The suspects and the truck were escorted to the Tema Regional Police Headquarters, where a detailed search uncovered 866 parcels of a white substance suspected to be cocaine concealed inside the sacks of gari.
According to the police, the seized consignment has an estimated street value of $6.928 million.
Investigators further disclosed that during interrogation, Delano Owen allegedly admitted ownership of the consignment and told investigators that the substance was cocaine.
The three suspects remain in police custody to assist with ongoing investigations, while the recovered exhibits have been secured as evidence.
Police say the suspected narcotics will undergo forensic analysis to determine their exact composition as investigations continue into the attempted export of the consignment and any possible links to a wider trafficking network.
