The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has inaugurated a new Audit Committee for the Ministry of the Interior, charging its members to ensure the implementation of recommendations arising from both internal and external audit reports as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and corporate governance.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, the Minister said the establishment of the committee reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the public purse, promoting transparency and enhancing financial management within public institutions. He commended the outgoing Audit Committee for its dedication and contribution to the Ministry’s strong record of financial discipline.
“I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to the outgoing chairman, Mr. Richard Ntim, and members of the previous Committee for your selfless dedication in ensuring the effectiveness of the Ministry’s Audit Committee,” Mr Mohammed-Mubarak said.
The Minister explained that the inauguration was in accordance with Section 86 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), which requires ministries, departments and agencies to establish Audit Committees to perform key governance and oversight functions.
He noted that, under Section 87 of Act 921, the committee comprises five voting members, including two representatives from the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), one representative from the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana, and two directors from the Ministry. Three officials—the Chief Director, Director of Finance and Chief Internal Auditor—will serve as observers.
Mr Mohammed-Mubarak tasked the newly inaugurated committee with ensuring that recommendations contained in internal and external audit reports are fully implemented. He also urged members to advise the Ministry on transparent financial management practices and support management in ensuring compliance with applicable laws, effective risk management and sound corporate governance.
He expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to discharge its mandate effectively and urged members to work collaboratively in support of the government’s governance and accountability agenda. The Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency, Mr Conrad Dumbah, welcomed the inauguration of the committee, describing it as an important step towards strengthening internal controls within the Ministry.
He said an effective Audit Committee plays a vital role in ensuring the prudent use of public funds, enhancing accountability and promoting good corporate governance across public institutions. The inauguration of the committee forms part of ongoing efforts by the government to reinforce financial oversight mechanisms and improve transparency and efficiency in the management of public resources.
