President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s electronic visa (e visa) portal on 25 May 2026, a major digital reform aimed at modernising visa processing, strengthening border security, and improving efficiency in the country’s immigration system. The launch event coincided with the 63rd African Union Day celebrations and brought together government officials, diplomats, and stakeholders in the aviation and security sectors.
The new e visa system replaces traditional manual visa application processes with a fully digital platform designed to allow applicants to submit, process, and receive visa approvals online. According to authorities, the system is expected to reduce processing delays, improve transparency, and enhance Ghana’s ability to monitor and manage entry into the country through secure digital verification tools.
At the launch, President Mahama emphasised that the initiative goes beyond technology, describing it as a broader commitment to governance reform and continental integration. He stated that the platform reflects Ghana’s determination to embrace innovation while strengthening cooperation across Africa and improving public service delivery.
A key announcement made during the event was the government’s decision to abolish visa fees for all African passport holders travelling to Ghana, effective immediately from 25 May 2026. The policy aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 framework, particularly the African Passport and Free Movement of People initiative, which seeks to ease mobility across the continent and deepen economic integration.
President Mahama explained that the decision is intended to support trade, tourism, and cultural exchange among African nations, while reinforcing Ghana’s long standing commitment to Pan Africanism. He noted that the policy also complements the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, which aims to boost intra African commerce by reducing barriers to movement and trade.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the e visa portal as a strategic step toward opening Ghana’s borders to business, tourism, and investment opportunities. He stressed that the system has been designed with enhanced international standard security features to ensure that while access is made easier, national security remains fully protected.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak added that the platform positions Ghana to compete not only through its natural resources but also through efficient systems that support investment and global partnerships. He highlighted that digital transformation in border management is increasingly important in a global environment where security and mobility must be balanced.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe also underscored the importance of integration between the e visa system and Ghana’s passenger information systems. He explained that linking these platforms will significantly improve border control operations, enhance passenger screening, and streamline the travel experience for visitors arriving in the country.
The event also featured remarks from Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who praised Ghana for its leadership in advancing African unity and strengthening ties with the Caribbean. She highlighted the historical and cultural connections between Ghana and Jamaica and expressed appreciation for Ghana’s support during regional challenges, including recovery efforts following recent natural disasters.
Diplomatic observers say the introduction of the e visa system, combined with visa fee waivers for African citizens, could position Ghana as a leading hub for regional mobility and tourism within West Africa and beyond. The reforms are also expected to strengthen Ghana’s attractiveness as an investment destination by simplifying entry procedures for business travellers.
Security agencies, tourism operators, and aviation stakeholders present at the launch are expected to play a key role in the implementation phase, ensuring that the system operates efficiently while maintaining strict border security protocols.
As Ghana continues to pursue digital governance reforms, the e visa initiative is seen as part of a broader strategy to modernise public services, strengthen regional integration, and promote economic growth through improved connectivity.
