TGMA 2026: Who are the frontrunners for Artiste of the Year?

The 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), set for May 9, 2026, at the Palms Convention Centre inside La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, is shaping up as one of the most fiercely contested editions in the ceremony’s nearly three-decade history. At the heart of the conversation is the Artiste of the Year category, which this year features six nominees: Black Sherif, Medikal, Stonebwoy, Wendy Shay, Sarkodie, and Diana Hamilton. All six have had credible years in music, but the race has been defined by a handful of compelling narratives that go beyond the music itself.

Historical trends and nomination stats point squarely to what analysts have described as the top-tier trio of Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, and Medikal. Their multiple nominations across key categories give them a statistical edge, while Wendy Shay and Sarkodie remain competitive but may need a public swing vote or a viral hit to tilt the scales. Diana Hamilton faces the longest odds.

The 27th TGMA will be held on May 9, 2026, with the Artiste of the Year announcement expected to be the night’s defining moment. With Black Sherif’s streaming dominance, Medikal’s campaign machine, Stonebwoy’s historical ambition, and Wendy Shay’s visible hunger all pulling in different directions, the outcome is genuinely uncertain and that, arguably, is what makes this edition one of the most exciting in years.

More than 13 musicians were in contention for the title before the list was whittled down to six nominees, with Head of Public Events and Communications at Charterhouse Ghana, Robert Klah, disclosing that all 13 initially met the minimum requirements, which include hit songs, album output, and audience appeal.

Black Sherif: the streaming giant with a casual crown

Black Sherif and Medikal each collected eight nominations, the joint highest of any acts in the field. Black Sherif’s eight nods span Artiste of the Year, Best Hip-Hop Song for Were Dem Boys, Best Afropop Song for Sacrifice, Best Hiplife/Hiphop Artiste, Songwriter of the Year, International Collaboration, Album/EP of the Year for Iron Boy, and Best Music Video.

Iron Boy surpassed 100 million streams on Boomplay in February 2026, making Black Sherif the first Ghanaian artist to achieve that milestone on the platform and his second project to cross the mark, following The Villain I Never Was. This kind of sustained streaming footprint across two separate projects signals not a moment of popularity but a career-wide listener base rooted in Africa’s most-used music platform.

Yet the paradox surrounding Black Sherif’s campaign is hard to ignore. He does not seem particularly eager. He has already worn the crown and by his own admission believes Wendy Shay deserves it this time. That lack of visible campaign energy could cost him.

TGMA 2026: Who are the frontrunners for Artiste of the Year?

Medikal: campaigning like it’s an election

Medikal has confidently positioned himself as the frontrunner for the Artiste of the Year title, stating that he does not consider any of his fellow nominees a serious challenge. In his view, the year under review has been one of dominance, marked by consistent releases, strong fan engagement, and a visible presence across the music scene.

Medikal is the strategist. If awards were won on campaign execution alone, he would already be engraving his name on the plaque. From TGMA in Schools to the Xperience Concert, he has been everywhere. Online, offline, and even at the grassroots level in communities like Sowutuom, his campaign is relentless. Banners, PR pushes, and direct voter engagement show he is treating this like an election.

Medikal’s eight nominations cover Best Hiplife Song, Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance, HipLife/HipHop Artiste, Album/EP of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Most Popular Song, and Collaboration of the Year.  His album Disturbation 2 and the viral collaboration Shoulder featuring Shatta Wale and Beeztrap KOTM have kept him consistently in the conversation throughout the awards season.

Stonebwoy: reviving old claims and stoking new ones

Stonebwoy has reignited one of Ghanaian music’s most persistent debates, again insisting he is a three-time TGMA Artiste of the Year winner despite official records recognising only two victories. “I’ve won the Artiste of the Year three times, with two being formal and the other one, when the time comes, we will all see,” he said during an interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey on April 10, 2026. The two formally recognised victories are his wins at the 2015 and 2024 editions of the awards scheme.

Stonebwoy’s eight nominations cover Best Afropop Song, Best Music Video, Reggae/Dancehall Artiste, Songwriter of the Year, Album/EP of the Year for Torcher, and Artiste of the Year.  A third Artiste of the Year win, even by official count, would place him in rare company and give the 2026 edition a historic dimension.

Wendy Shay: fire and desire

Wendy Shay is all fire. She has been consistent, visible, and vocally invested in the race. Her performances over the year have been solid and her desire is unmistakable.  Her album Ready is among the Album/EP of the Year nominees and she enters the night having been crowned Best Female Artist in West Africa at the ninth edition of the All Africa Music Awards in Lagos, a continental validation that adds credibility to her campaign. She is the only woman in the Artiste of the Year field and has publicly noted the absence of female representation in mainstream award conversations, a point that has resonated with a section of the voting public.

Sarkodie and Diana Hamilton: respected but outside the core race

Sarkodie and Stonebwoy, while always formidable names, do not quite fit the narrative this year.  Sarkodie’s brand remains one of the most enduring in Ghanaian music and his continued presence in the category reflects sustained respect from the industry, but the year’s conversation has largely been driven by other nominees. Diana Hamilton, the gospel powerhouse and a former Artiste of the Year winner, faces the steepest climb in a field where hip hop and Afrobeats account for the bulk of this year’s commercial momentum.
