Early in my career, I believed in a simple principle: work hard, and your results will speak for you. It felt fair, earned, and honest—a belief many young professionals carry into their first roles.
Over time, across experiences from insurance sales floors to strategic discussions in business development and analytics, I learned a more nuanced truth: hard work matters, but positioning determines trajectory. This is the corporate paradox many professionals don’t anticipate.
When Initiative Creates Opportunity
One of my earliest lessons in leadership came while working as a Life Insurance Sales Executive. Sales is high-pressure: targets are visible, performance is measurable, and expectations are constant.
When our Sales Team Manager became unavailable for an extended period, the team continued to meet targets—but leadership was missing. Instead of waiting for someone senior to step up, I took responsibility: organizing check-ins, supporting struggling colleagues, ensuring structured reporting, and keeping morale stable. I wasn’t competing; I was protecting the team.
When management appointed a new Sales Manager, I was offered the role. The lesson was clear: leadership is often about recognizing what a team needs and responding before authority is granted. Hard work alone doesn’t elevate you; demonstrating readiness does.
Performance Is Expected. Leadership Is Observed.
In most corporate environments, performance is a baseline. Everyone is expected to meet deliverables, hit targets, and show loyalty. But promotions rarely reward effort alone. Leaders look for those who:
- Stabilize teams under pressure
- Think beyond their immediate roles
- Influence outcomes outside their job description
- Demonstrate leadership before being asked
Hard work keeps you employed. Leadership behaviors make you promotable.
The Power of Perspective
A colleague in a different company exemplified this principle. She wasn’t the loudest or most senior in meetings, but she consistently offered thoughtful insights, connected overlooked ideas, and asked sharp, strategic questions. Eventually, her input carried more weight than her title, and she was promoted to head of department.
The takeaway: organizations elevate those who elevate conversations. Contribution and perspective often outweigh silent competence.
Lessons Across Corporate Systems
Whether in Ghana or the U.S., the pattern is consistent. Professionals advance not simply because they work longer hours, but because they:
- Contribute meaningfully in strategic discussions
- Frame initiatives in business terms, linking work to revenue, efficiency, or risk mitigation
- Build credibility with decision-makers
Competence is essential, but clarity of thought, executive presence, and strategic communication transform competence into career momentum.
Why Hard Work Stops Differentiating
Hard work is the entry requirement—not the advantage. When everyone is competent, differentiation comes from:
- Strategic thinking
- Clear communication
- Influence and relationship capital
- Visible judgment under pressure
If your results remain confined to your immediate role, leadership may assume you are performing exactly where you belong. Visibility matters.
The Competence Trap
Many professionals fall into the “competence trap,” believing that consistent delivery guarantees recognition. Often it doesn’t—not due to bias, but because executives cannot observe every contribution. Work must be translated into business relevance to be noticed. This is not self-promotion—it’s clarity.
Principles for Career Acceleration
Reflecting on my experiences, these principles consistently drive growth:
- Demonstrate readiness before it’s required – operate at the next level before the title arrives.
- Frame work in business terms – communicate impact, not just activity.
- Elevate conversations – interpret strategic implications rather than only reporting updates.
- Build sponsors – cultivate advocates who trust and support your advancement.
- Invest in people – relational capital compounds over time and drives team success.
The Real Equation
Across markets and systems, career acceleration follows a simple formula:
Competence + Strategic Visibility + Business Context + Relational Intelligence = Promotion Readiness
Hard work alone is insufficient. Advancement favors those who combine execution with visibility, perspective, and relational insight. Stepping forward in your career isn’t about ambition—it’s about ownership.
For ambitious professionals early in their careers: work hard, deliver excellence, and then go further—raise your hand, offer insight, lead when leadership is absent, and connect your work to the bigger picture. Competence gets you in the game; positioning gets you to the next level.
