Health minister suspends Nalerugu nursing college principal over unauthorized admissions

The Ministry of Health, has announced the immediate suspension of the Principal of the Nurses and Midwifery Training College in Nalerugu following allegations of unauthorized admissions at the institution.

The directive was issued by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh during a working visit to the Upper East, North East and Northern Regions. The tour was part of a broader assessment of health facilities and training institutions aimed at evaluating operations, compliance and service delivery standards.

According to the official press release dated February 27, 2026, the Minister had been briefed earlier about irregular admissions practices at the Nurses and Midwifery Training College Nalerugu. Upon visiting the school and reviewing preliminary findings, he ordered the immediate suspension of the head of the institution pending further investigations.

The Ministry indicated that the suspension is intended to allow for a full and impartial inquiry into the matter. Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of students affected or the specific nature of the alleged breaches, but the issue centers on admissions carried out outside approved protocols.

Minister Akandoh emphasized that compliance with established admission procedures is mandatory across all health training institutions. He warned that any institutional head found to have engaged in unauthorized practices would face strict sanctions, underscoring what he described as a zero tolerance approach to administrative misconduct.

The statement reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the preservation of high standards within Ghana’s health education system. Nursing and midwifery colleges play a critical role in supplying trained personnel to the country’s healthcare sector, making governance and regulatory compliance a priority.
