Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away, his manager Nana Poku Ashis confirmed on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Sarpong, widely revered as one of Ghana’s most influential figures in gospel music, died while receiving treatment at Emena Hospital in Kumasi after a period of ill health, according to reports.

Yaw Sarpong’s music career spanned over four decades, during which he pioneered contemporary Akan gospel music and helped define its direction and popularity across Ghana and beyond. As the leader of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, he produced numerous timeless gospel songs that remain staples in worship services and Christian gatherings, including hits like Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu and Awurade Kasa.

Sarpong’s influence extended beyond performance; his songwriting and leadership shaped generations of gospel artists. In recognition of his contribution to Ghanaian music, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, highlighting his enduring legacy in the gospel genre.

His death comes weeks after the passing of Maame Tiwaa, a celebrated long‑serving member and backing vocalist of the Asomafo band, whose voice helped define the group’s sound for decades before she died on December 7, 2025.
