Adwoa Safo Says Her Political Future Is Aligned with Bawumia, Not Kennedy Agyapong

Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has publicly clarified her political alignment within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating unequivocally that her future lies with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia rather than Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong. Her declaration comes at a time when the NPP is navigating a critical phase of internal reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking openly to party supporters, Adwoa Safo stressed that her decision is based on political conviction, strategic thinking, and her vision for the future of the party, not personal considerations. She acknowledged her long-standing personal relationship with Kennedy Agyapong, including the fact that they share children together, but emphasised that politics must be separated from private life. According to her, leadership choices within the NPP must be guided by competence, unity, and the capacity to reposition the party for future electoral success.
Adwoa Safo explained that she believes Dr. Bawumia represents continuity, experience, and strategic leadership at a time when the party needs to rebuild trust with the Ghanaian electorate. She described the former Vice President as a figure capable of bringing together the various factions within the NPP and offering a clear policy direction ahead of the next general elections. In her view, the party’s recovery depends on thoughtful leadership rather than emotionally driven decisions.
The former lawmaker also reflected on the lessons the NPP must learn from its recent electoral loss. She argued that the defeat should prompt honest self-assessment and structural reforms rather than internal blame-shifting. According to her, the choice of the party’s next flagbearer will play a defining role in shaping public perception and restoring confidence in the NPP’s ability to govern effectively.
While recognising Kennedy Agyapong’s influence and contributions to the party, Adwoa Safo expressed concerns about her political relevance under his leadership. She suggested that her experience and service to the party might not be fully valued in a future administration led by him, a factor she said influenced her decision to throw her support behind Dr. Bawumia. Her comments reflect the difficult calculations politicians often make when aligning themselves in competitive internal contests.
Adwoa Safo’s political career spans several years of active involvement in the NPP. She has served as a Member of Parliament, Deputy Majority Leader, and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection. Throughout her career, she has been known for her forthright positions and willingness to speak candidly on internal party matters, even when such views attract controversy. Her latest declaration continues that pattern of outspoken engagement.
The NPP’s internal leadership race has become increasingly visible as various party figures openly declare their preferences. Dr. Bawumia, who previously led the party into the 2024 elections, retains strong grassroots support among sections of the party who believe his economic background and governance experience remain valuable assets. On the other hand, Kennedy Agyapong has positioned himself as a bold and outspoken alternative, appealing to members who favour a more confrontational political style.
Adwoa Safo has also moved to dispel rumours suggesting that she had shifted her allegiance away from Dr. Bawumia. She described such reports as misleading and politically motivated, insisting that her loyalty has remained consistent. According to her, misinformation surrounding internal party alignments only serves to deepen divisions at a time when unity is essential.
Her public endorsement carries symbolic weight within the NPP. As a well-known figure with national recognition, her position may influence delegates and supporters who are still undecided about the party’s leadership direction. Analysts note that endorsements from senior party members could shape the tone and outcome of the flagbearer race as the contest intensifies.
As the NPP charts its path toward the 2028 general elections, the party faces the challenge of managing internal competition while projecting unity to the public. Adwoa Safo’s declaration underscores the broader debate within the party about leadership style, experience, and strategic direction. For now, her message is clear and uncompromising: she believes Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia offers the best chance for her political future and for the NPP’s renewal.
