Lawyers Deny OSP’s Claim of Seizing Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid’s Assets

Lawyers for former National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Chief Executive, Dr. Mustapha Abdul‑Hamid, have unequivocally rejected claims by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) alleging the seizure of assets worth more than GHC 100 million linked to their client.

In a detailed statement issued by Hay & Partners at Law on 5 November 2025, the legal representatives described the OSP’s announcement as “false, misleading, and injurious”. They assert that no assets or businesses belonging to Dr Abdul-Hamid have been traced, identified or confiscated by the OSP.

The statement emphasises that the amended charge sheet filed by the OSP on 17 October 2025, which lists five counts of alleged offences, does not reference any confiscated assets, business interests or property purportedly linked to Dr Abdul-Hamid. “Not even one of those charges mentions, refers to, or concerns any asset or business purportedly owned by Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid,” the lawyers said.

According to the legal team, their client “owns no such assets, directly or indirectly, and no property worth the stated amount exists anywhere in connection with him.” They further accused the OSP of engaging in “public theatrics and false reportage” instead of focusing on prosecutorial diligence.

The background to this matter involves an investigation launched by the OSP into alleged corruption and corruption-related offences at the NPA. According to OSP statements released earlier, the task force claimed to have uncovered assets and property valued in excess of GHC 100 million and US$100,000 linked to individuals involved.

However, Dr Abdul-Hamid’s lawyers contend that none of those assets have been lawfully seized or formally linked to him. They maintain that he has cooperated fully with all investigation processes, attended court appearances, and remains compliant with the rule of law.

The firm warned that attempts to misinform the public or prejudice opinion against their client could undermine the integrity of Ghana’s judicial system. They reiterated that Dr Abdul-Hamid remains innocent until proven guilty under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

As the matter proceeds through the courts, observers will monitor whether the OSP provides further disclosures or revisions to its case, and whether the allegations around asset seizure can be substantiated.
