A Kumasi High Court has sentenced a police inspector to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend in Adum, a bustling suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The convict, Inspector Ahmed Twum, was found guilty of fatally shooting his 27-year-old girlfriend, Maadwoa, in April 2023 following a heated confrontation. The case, which drew national attention and widespread outrage, reignited public discourse on domestic violence and firearm abuse among security officers.

Delivering the verdict, the presiding judge described the act as “a gross abuse of power and trust,” stressing that law enforcement officers must serve as protectors of life, not perpetrators of violence. The court held that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the killing was premeditated.

According to police and eyewitness reports, the tragic incident occurred near Adum’s forecourt, where the inspector allegedly confronted the victim over relationship issues before firing multiple shots at her.

The verdict brings closure to a case that gripped the nation for months, as the victim’s family and women’s rights advocates called for swift justice. Civil society organizations have since renewed calls for psychological screening and counseling programs for personnel in the Ghana Police Service to prevent similar tragedies.

The Ghana Police Service, in a statement, has assured the public of its commitment to upholding the law, maintaining professionalism, and ensuring that no officer is above accountability.
