Crashed Z-9 Helicopter Was Ghana’s Only Airworthy Aircraft – Col. Festus Aboagye Reveals

Crashed Helicopter Was Airworthy – Col. Festus

Retired military officer Col. Festus Aboagye has raised serious concerns about Ghana’s air fleet, revealing that the Z-9 helicopter which crashed on August 6 was the only one in operational condition at the time.

Speaking on The KeyPoints program on Saturday, August 16, Col. Aboagye alleged that out of the six Z-9 helicopters acquired by the country, only one was fit to fly, and that was the aircraft involved in the tragic crash.

“Out of the six Z-9s that we have, only one was airworthy. And unfortunately, that was the one that went down,” he emphasized.

The revelation has sparked debate about the state of Ghana’s military equipment, particularly the maintenance and readiness of its air assets. Concerns are also mounting over the implications for national security and emergency response capabilities.

Authorities are yet to issue a detailed statement on the crash investigation or respond to Col. Aboagye’s claims.

The incident has renewed calls for government investment in defense infrastructure and stricter oversight in aircraft maintenance to prevent future tragedies.
