Members of Political Groups Unite To Honour Victims

Some members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) were among the mourners who gathered at the memorial service in honour of the eight Ghanaians who lost their lives in last Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The solemn ceremony, held at the forecourt of the State House, brought together political leaders, military officials, clergy, traditional rulers, and grieving families. The atmosphere was heavy with sorrow as tributes poured in for the fallen — whose deaths have been described as a national tragedy that has united Ghanaians in grief.

The NPP delegation, dressed in sombre black attire, was seen consoling bereaved families and offering words of comfort. Party members present stressed that moments like this go beyond politics, calling for unity in the face of loss.

One senior party figure, speaking briefly to the press, said:

“We are here as Ghanaians first, and as political actors second. Today, we stand with the families, with the military, and with the entire nation. This tragedy has touched every home, and we must come together to heal.”

The memorial service forms part of the three-day national mourning period declared by President John Dramani Mahama. It precedes the state funeral scheduled for Friday, 15th August at the Black Star Square, where the eight victims — including Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed — will be laid to rest with full honours.

The ceremony featured Christian and Islamic prayers, military salutes, and musical performances that paid tribute to the lives and service of the departed. A book of condolence was also opened for mourners to leave messages of sympathy.

As the crowd dispersed, the message from leaders across the political divide remained consistent: This is a time for national solidarity, not division.
