Farewell Planned as Ghana Mourns Music Legend Daddy Lumba with One Week Observance and Royal Funeral in Kumasi

Accra to Host One Week Observance for Daddy Lumba

Daddy Lumba funeral – The family of the late Ghanaian highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has officially announced that a One Week celebration of his passing will take place in Accra on Saturday, August 30, 2025. The venue for the event, however, remains under deliberation due to concerns over crowd management following the overwhelming attendance at the Candlelight Vigil held earlier.

The disclosure was made by Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu, head of the Lumba family, following a solemn visit to the Manhyia Palace to formally inform His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, of the music icon’s death.

Speaking on the importance of adhering to cultural protocols, Kofi Owusu explained that it was necessary to first notify the Asante King and seek his wise counsel before publicising any plans related to the final rites of the late superstar.

Royal Roots Require Royal Farewell

“Lumba was not just a national treasure but also a royal son of the Asante Kingdom,” Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu emphasized.

“His Royal Majesty warmly received us and acknowledged our mission even before we spoke. He made it clear that Daddy Lumba, being a son of the soil and a royal, must be returned to Kumasi for his final funeral rites,” he added.

He further explained that although the One Week event will be hosted in Accra, the main funeral will be held in Kumasi as a tribute to Lumba’s noble lineage and out of respect for the traditions of the Asante Kingdom.

“The Asantehene’s message was very clear. As a family, we now know exactly how to give Lumba the dignified farewell he deserves. The One Week will be in Accra, but we must bring him home back to Kumasi for the final journey.”

Venue for One Week Celebration Still Under Review

Daddy Lumba funeral – Following the massive turnout at the Candlelight Vigil held at Independence Square on Saturday, August 2, the Lumba family has hinted at a possible change of venue for the upcoming One Week celebration.

According to Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu, “We initially chose a venue in Accra, but we are reconsidering due to the sheer number of people who came to honour him during the vigil. To prevent any form of chaos or stampede, we are currently deliberating on securing a larger and more secure space.”

He stated that the safety and comfort of fans and sympathizers are of top priority, especially as the event is expected to draw massive crowds from all walks of life both local and international.
