BREAKING: Defence and Environment Ministers Die in Military Helicopter Crash

Ghana has been plunged into national mourning following the tragic deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a military helicopter crash near Adansi Akrofuom. The government has officially confirmed that all eight passengers aboard the Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter perished in the accident.

National Tragedy Confirmed

The announcement was made by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who stated that the helicopter was en route to Obuasi for a ministerial oversight visit when it crashed under unclear circumstances.

The victims included:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  • Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
  • Three senior military officers
  • Two technical staff
  • One pilot

Initial eyewitness accounts described smoke trailing from the aircraft before a loud explosion was heard in the forested hills of Adansi. Emergency responders and military recovery teams confirmed that there were no survivors.

Flags to Fly at Half-Mast

In honour of the deceased, President John Dramani Mahama has declared that all national flags fly at half-mast for the next seven days. He described the incident as “a heartbreaking loss to the Republic and a dark day for Ghana,” paying tribute to the patriotism and service of both ministers and the other victims.

Government sources have confirmed that a full investigation has been commissioned to determine the cause of the crash, with support from international aviation experts.

National and Continental Condolences Pour In

Messages of condolence have begun pouring in from world leaders, ECOWAS, the African Union, and other diplomatic missions. Parliament is expected to hold a special sitting in tribute to the fallen public servants.
