“No Room for Xenophobia” – President Mahama Reaffirms Ghana’s Commitment to Regional Unity

President John Dramani Mahama has strongly affirmed Ghana’s stance against xenophobia, declaring that there is “no room for xenophobia in Ghana.” His statement was made during a diplomatic meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu, in Accra.

In a period marked by social media-fueled concerns over tensions between local communities and Nigerians living in Ghana, President Mahama sought to reassure both Ghanaians and Nigerians of the country’s commitment to peace, unity, and regional integration.

Ghana Upholds ECOWAS Protocols and Mutual History

President Mahama reiterated Ghana’s adherence to ECOWAS protocols, particularly those concerning the free movement of people, goods, and services. He emphasized the long-standing ties between Ghana and Nigeria, underlining that the bond between the two West African nations transcends temporary misunderstandings or isolated incidents.

“These recent tensions are not representative of Ghana’s relationship with Nigeria or its citizens,” Mahama said. He explained that recent protests, which had gone viral online, involved fewer than 50 people and were quickly addressed by Ghanaian authorities. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety, dignity, and protection of all Nigerians living in Ghana,” he added.

Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu welcomed the assurances and praised Ghana for its diplomatic clarity and continued efforts to foster regional solidarity within the ECOWAS community.
