Ghanaians can now travel to Barbados without a visa for up to six months after the official announcement by H.E. Juliette Bynoe‑Sutherland, Barbados’ first resident High Commissioner to Ghana. The declaration, made during a press briefing this week, highlights one of the most travel‑friendly visa exemptions in the Caribbean region. As part of a wider visa policy that includes several African and Caribbean nations, this move reflects strengthened diplomatic and economic ties between Barbados and Ghana, building on Barbados’s push to expand its presence in African markets.

What the visa exemption means and context for travellers

Under the updated visa policy, Ghanaian passport holders no longer need a visa to enter Barbados and can stay for up to six months within any 12‑month period. This joins a select list of over 50 countries benefiting from Barbados’s visa waiver, including Canada, the UK, Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania. The exemption aims to enhance people‑to‑people exchanges, tourism, business, and cultural collaboration. Since coming into office in 2024, High Commissioner Bynoe‑Sutherland has emphasised her mission to build strong bilateral relations, including facilitating nurse exchange programmes and healthcare partnerships.

This visa‑free status brings new opportunities for Ghanaians to explore Barbados for education, tourism, trade, and professional exchange without bureaucratic barriers. Travel counsellors recommend confirming the six‑month duration and preparing onward travel proof prior to departure.
