Police Seize Equipment, Step Up Crackdown on Illegal Mining
The Western Regional Police Command has arrested 27 individuals in a coordinated operation against illegal mining, also known locally as galamsey, in the Wassa Amanten area.
According to a statement issued by the police, the intelligence-led operation targeted multiple unauthorized mining sites believed to be contributing to environmental degradation and water pollution in the region.
Mining Equipment Seized, Changfan Machine Destroyed
The police confiscated various items during the raid, including:
- A tricycle
- An unregistered Boxer motorbike
- Several water pumping machines
Notably, a changfan machine—a floating mining platform often used in river-based mining—was found and destroyed on-site. The police emphasized this as part of a broader strategy to dismantle infrastructure supporting illegal mining operations.
Suspects in Custody, Investigation Ongoing
All 27 suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations. The seized items have been retained as evidence. Authorities indicate that further arrests and site closures may follow as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal mining.
This latest action forms part of Ghana’s wider efforts to curb galamsey activities, which have been blamed for the destruction of arable lands, contamination of water bodies, and other environmental hazards.
Background: Ghana Intensifies Anti-Galamsey Efforts
The arrest comes on the heels of several recent anti-galamsey operations across the country. Just last week, 15 suspects were apprehended at Manso Adubia, and a nationwide task force has been intensifying its campaign to eliminate illegal mining from forest reserves and riverbanks.
Environmental groups have lauded the efforts but continue to call for more sustainable enforcement and community engagement to prevent recurrence.
