Government of Ghana is set to impose sanctions on telecommunications companies that continue to deliver substandard services to consumers, according to Sam Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and a leading voice on digital communication affairs.

Speaking in an interview, the MP expressed strong dissatisfaction with the declining quality of service offered by telcos, including frequent call drops, slow internet speeds, and unjustified data charges. He stated that consumers deserve better, and the government can no longer tolerate the situation.

“We have given the telcos enough room to improve, but it seems they are taking the Ghanaian public for granted. Sanctions are coming,” Sam George warned.

He emphasized that regulatory bodies like the National Communications Authority (NCA) must be more proactive in holding telcos accountable. He also revealed that the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communications, of which he is a ranking member, is pushing for more stringent measures, including fines and license reviews.

According to Sam George, the poor services have economic implications, affecting productivity and digital innovation, especially as Ghana pushes toward a digital economy.

“You cannot talk about digital transformation when basic connectivity is a daily struggle for citizens,” he added.

The announcement has been welcomed by many Ghanaians who have long complained about the lack of reliable mobile and internet services, despite the high cost of data and airtime.

The proposed sanctions are expected to force telecom operators to reinvest in infrastructure and improve customer service, or risk serious regulatory consequences.
